Matthew 8:19-27
Then one of the teachers of religious law said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” But Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place even to lay his head.” Another of his disciples said, “Lord, first let me return home and bury my father.” But Jesus told him, “Follow me now. Let the spiritually dead bury their own dead.”
Jesus Calms the Storm
Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples. 24Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” Jesus responded, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm. The disciples were amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked. “Even the winds and waves obey him!”
"Foxes have holes..." Dear friend who wants to come and stay with Me in my home, I’m glad you want to be with Me. But, you also want the comforts of a resting place and the notoriety of being aligned with Me. I am not here for rest and comfort. I left them behind to come here. No, I am on the move. I am going about the business and journey the Father has given Me. If you want notoriety now, do not align yourself with Me. My name will become a curse word to most people. Those aligned with Me will be disdained. If you are prepared to be on the move with Me and to suffer the pains of rejection with Me now, in favor of eternal rest, comfort and loving acceptance, then by all means, COME! I will never leave you or forsake you.
"Permit me to go first and..." Dear friend who wants to go with Me when you are fully ready and all your affairs are in order, I am on the move. Time is of the essence. If you wait to follow Me until you feel ready, you will never join Me. Nothing you can do will ever make you feel ready to follow Me. The affairs of life will never be fully taken care of. Now is the time. Today is the day. I will make you ready and take care of your life along the way. JUST FOLLOW!
"Jesus woke up..." Dear friends who are following Me, and want our journey to be predictably easy, The reality is, there is a war raging all around us, all the time. Comfort, notoriety, ease, neatly packaged lives and predictability do not have a place in battle. In this war, no person can escape its effects and no person can choose neutrality. Each must choose whom he or she will serve. The battlefield lies in the unseen. The fierce and forceful winds of lies, fears and false teaching rage. They are unseen, but their effects are felt by the whole of creation without reprieve.
Mankind is so easily stirred up by these winds into chaos and confusion. The weapons of man will never calm these waves. The strength to fight is found in the resurrection power of Jesus. He arose and His WORD calms the fierce winds. Lies, fears and false teaching are conquered with the full armor of God.
The Belt of Truth so you can move forward with confidence. The Breastplate of Righteousness so your heart is protected from fear. The Shoes of the Good News of Peace so you know your Heaven- bound objective and won’t trip over false teaching. The Shield of Faith which will enable you to advance in the onslaught of doubt. The Helmet of Salvation to guard your mind from lies.
The Sword of the Spirit which is the eternal and true Word of God; the only words that can mortally wound the enemy and free the captives from their bonds.
Yes, the winds rage and the powerful chaos ensues. But Jesus arose. And He asks His followers, “Why are you afraid? Your faith is small.” Know your place in the reality of the battle. Know your King and where your allegiance rests. Know to which kingdom you belong. If you have chosen to follow Jesus, the Lord of Heaven’s armies, know that our victory is secure. Know that your armor and your weapon will not fail you. Know that the power of our King is not asleep to the storms of this life. He is very much awake and is as powerful as ever; and this power is in His people. So take courage and be strong. Release your failing grip on comfort, notoriety, readiness and predictability. Take up your armor and learn to use it well. Join the ranks of the faithful. Know that our King is not tame. But to those who belong to His Kingdom, rest assured, He is good.
